Nature

In the natural state, the wild boar and his family roamed through the forests consuming the feeds provided by nature. On the modern farm, the range is very much restricted and frequently entirely devoid of vegetation. As a result of this confinement, domestic pigs have less choice in their selection of feed compared with their wild counterparts. For the most part they are only able to consume what their caretaker provides. For this reason it is critical that the feed that is fed is a high quality complete ration.

Energy

The energy level of the ration is vital; energy is the body's fuel supply. Every movement and activity of the pig's life involves use of energy for breathing, muscular movement, heat to keep the body warm, and the energy required to run the chemical processes involved in converting feed to animal use. The principal source of energy in Castlereagh grower and finisher pellet is carbohydrates and fats.

Protein

Protein is just as important as energy. Proteins supply the building materials from which body tissue and many body regulators, such as enzymes and hormones, are made. Each protein is made up of several nitrogen compounds called amino acids. There are 22 or more amino acids. Of these 22 or so, 10 are essential because the pig cannot manufacture sufficient quantities to permit maximum growth and performance. This is why the feed you choose needs to be complete, because the growing pig can only get these essential amino acids from the feed supplied.

Of all the common farm animals the pig is most likely to suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, because of the greater prevalence of confinement feeding the only way the pig can get what it needs is from the ration.
