Creep Feeding

Creep feeding is the supplementation of calves while they are nursing. It
increases weaning weight. The basis for this response is related to the
lactation curve of beef cows, the increasing nutrient requirements of the calf
during the nursing period, and the decline in feed quality and quantity typical
of most pastures or ranges which support the cows and calves during
lactation. Studies reveal that milk production of dairy cows increases up to
the fourth or sixth month following freshening, then declines gradually. By
contrast, maximum milk production of beef cows occurs during the first 2
months after calving, then declines.

Feeding Requirements:

Creep fed calves need special rations, since they are both in forced
production and finishing. They are expected simultaneously to lay on fat and
grow in protein tissues and skeleton.

That is why Castlereagh 16% calf pellets are high in protein, rich in readily
available energy and fortified with minerals and vitamins and with all the
nutrients in proper balance, they are very palatable and digestible.
When 3 to 4 weeks of age calves should be started on feed very gradually.
For the first 3 to 5 days only about 100 gm of feed per calf should be placed
in the feeders per day, any left over's should be cleaned out and given to the
cows each day.

After 5 to 7 days of hand feeding the creep ration can be left before the
calves safely. Once they are on full feed never let the feeder run empty, and
avoid sudden changes. During the first 30 days, they will consume about 500
gm per head per day. By the end of the fifth month they should be up to 4
kg daily. Of cause with good pasture and plenty of milk these figures may be
halved. Calves will consume approximately 225 kg of creep feed per head
from one month of age to weaning. In years of lush pasture it will be less, in
dry years more.

Among the reasons for and the benefits from creep feeding are the following:
1. It provides a way in which to compensate for insufficient milk.
2. It makes for heavier weaning weights.
3. It makes for more uniform calves.
4. It makes it possible for calves to achieve their full genetic growth potential.
5. It makes for economical gains, for young gains are cheap gains.
6. It is economically more efficient to feed calves directly than to feed cows too liberally.
7. It makes for attractive purebred calves.
8. It makes it easy to reinforce and improve milk.
9. It simplifies weaning.
10. It makes for marketing flexibility.
11. It narrows the price between heifers and steers.
12. It makes for better lifetime reproductive performance of heifers.
13. It provides calves that are accustomed to feed with the result that they will continue to feed in the feed lot with a minimum of stress, shrink, digestive disturbances, and death losses, and without the normal period of 3 weeks
to get them on full feed.
